Welcome to Alta Vista
An independent junior kindergarten
through eighth grade progressive school based in San Francisco, Alta Vista prepares students to thrive as creative thinkers, innovators, and catalysts for positive change in the world. Its STEAM-focused program and a foundation of social and emotional
development inspire curiosity, creative problem-solving, and love of learning.
Rube Goldberg Machines
An annual engineering tradition at AVS is building a Rube Goldberg machine -- a contraption that uses a chain reaction to teach the concept of cause and effect.
This hands-on learning project encourages students to tinker with a variety of simple machines, namely inclined planes, levers, pulleys, and wheels and axles.
Crafting a Rube Goldberg Machine isn't just about pulleys and levers -- this challenge requires persistence, resilience, flexible thinking, and creative problem-solving as students work in teams to craft a successful machine.
