Dear AVS Parents:
What a spectacular start to the academic year. With the moon positioned to eclipse the sun, we began the year fully aligning ourselves for exploration and discovery as community of learners. The activities of day one, which focused on the solar eclipse, seemed to be a proper introduction to what will be a stellar year.
Many of you may have noticed a new look to our AVS website. Tanya H. has volunteered her time, put in countless hours, engaged our community, and added her creative spirit to generating our new website. Along the way, she also has helped us refine our branding and messaging, an overdue project as the school has grown and changed from its early years of inception. We all owe Tanya a huge thank you for her work and our beautiful new site.
Volunteering is a great way to support AVS as it continues its accelerated growth, and the Lower School and Middle School parent groups provide an excellent opportunity to do so. Please consider helping us build a stronger community through volunteering, or by attending the many varied community events to get to know other parents and teachers.
On September 8th, the Lower School will host their “Back to School Night,” followed by the Middle School’s on September 13th. Each of these ADULT ONLY activities is an opportunity for you to meet and interact with your child’s teachers. Please save the date and plan to attend. Katie Gibbons and Jennie Chipparullo will be sending out additional information about the evenings shortly.
Please save the date for another community celebration, the “Fall Mingle.” The Fall Mingle, hosted by our Parent Group, is an opportunity for parents from both the Lower and Middle School to come together for a social. We will gather on September 22nd, starting at 6:00pm at the Pause Wine Bar on Market. I hope to see there.
2017-2018 academic year being AVS’s 8th year, we are starting to prepare our senior class for their transition into high school. Leading this charge is Jacqueline Thompson, our Middle School Dean of Students and High School Admission Officer. Jacqueline has started to meet with parents of 8th grade students for a series of informative sessions about this important and complicated process, high school application, and placement. We are very fortunate to have her guiding this abstruse procedure.
Part of high school placement is the “student interview.” We are planning on providing practice interviews for our 8th grade students. If you would like to volunteer as a practice interviewer, please reach out to Jacqueline or Jennie to let them know. Practice interviews will be schedule after Labor Day and before the Thanksgiving break.
The Lower School parking lot will be open on Mondays and Fridays prior to morning meetings. Lower School parents, if you have the time, please join us for these community-building meetings.
This is a short week as we head towards the Labor Day weekend. School will be closed on both Friday, September 1st and Monday, September 4th. Enjoy the long weekend.
Make sure to check the school’s calendar so as not to miss any of our many and varied activities.
