"What comes first, the art or the idea?" This question kicked off a unit on conceptual art. Students in Katherine's Is This Art? course looked at the work of artist Sol LeWitt, who was famously known for creating a set of instructions for others to carry out, believing that the idea was more important than how it looked. This video shows students following an actual set of LeWitt's instructions from beginning to end. While the instructions seemed specific enough, you will see how the students interpreted them in different ways. This activity allowed for a discussion about ideas, ownership, collaboration, and how an artist makes choices.
