On Friday, our Junior Kindergartners presented a project on what makes a friend. The class identified the following characteristics: It's someone who plays with you. It's someone who says “Hi!," "Are you ok?” and “Sorry.” A friend is not just someone who likes the same things, but someone who helps you, listens, and sees you for who you are, even when that friend seems different or makes mistakes.
In Mr. Rogers's song, "It’s You I Like," he writes that it’s not about the things you wear or the way you do your hair, but it's about the way you are right now, the "way down deep inside" you. The JKers looked carefully at each word in the song, sang it to each other, reflected on how it makes them feel, and watched a video of Mr. Rogers singing this song to a friend. The students were asked, “Why would Mr. Rogers write and sing this song?” They shared that he might sing it to one of his friends to tell that friend that he cares for them, he would want that person to know that they are special because of who they are on the inside, and because he would want them to know that he loves them so much and wants them come back and visit again.
Please enjoy our JK video of “It’s You I Like” and feel free to sing along.
