Black History Is American History
To rejoice in celebrating African American culture during Black History Month, fifth-grade student volunteers joined their teacher, Ms. Angela Fisher, and their music teacher, Alek Barkats, in singing a freedom song, "Woke Up This Morning with My Mind."
This month we acknowledge the strengths, accomplishments, and contributions of Black Americans. At Alta Vista, we highlight to our students that celebrating Black History this month is one of the many ways we honor our diverse community and diverse American History.
With our kindergarteners just learning that the first Black U.S. President, Barack Obama, was in office when they were born and now the first Black U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris, is in office, there is much to jump for joy in our country’s Black History this school year.
