Making Math Meaningful- Data Literacy

The need for citizens to be data literate is increasing exponentially. With the rise of Smart Technology, the amount of data being gathered on a daily basis is expanding each year. According to IBM, the last two years has produced 90% of the data ever created. The American education system is hearing the call to create more data centered curriculum, and data fluency is slowly being added to science, history, and math courses.

At AVS, our STEAM centered curriculum allows for data science to be taught in many subjects starting in kindergarten and spanning through 8th grade. At home, parents can help grow their student's (and their own) data literacy, through many meaningful and fun activities. Over the holiday break, try one of the above activities to start the conversation around data. Most importantly, begin discussing with your children the data you see in the world and how it impacts the lives you live.
